Austria boasts of her monastries and abbeys as a single reality in Europe, yes perhaps single in the world.
The greatest part of them was able to keep the original form of institution during the centuries since their foundation - bringing culture and history to the world of today.

Since ever centres of knowledge, arts and wisdom they could keep unaltered their existance thanks the various holy Orders and patronages by their sovereigns who made them indipendent through donations and foundations.

Also after Joseph II's reforms there are more than 30 "living" monastries in Austria of the following Orders: Benedictine, Cistercense, Praemostratense, Augustinians, Trappists, Fransiscans.
